Job description

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn’t imagine the future, we invent it. If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!

The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

LTI is seeking a Curriculum Developer to join the team! This role will be responsible for developing and maintaining a set of detailed assignments, datasets, and software packages that are used in Computational Linguistics courses at LTI, including courses for students in the LTI’s Ph.D. program, professional master’s programs, and undergraduate minor and concentrations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Designing and implementing educational computational linguistics projects including reviewing, maintaining, and updating course content and project-based courses that utilize effective and efficient learning methodologies;
  • Creating and evaluating datasets and assignments at the crossroads of linguistics and computation to meet specific educational needs in alignment with CMU’s Learning Management System (LMS), used by all Computational Linguistics students;
  • Designing and testing datasets to support the administration of projects to students, including performing content development (i.e., content and slide creation from existing materials) and reviewing materials for relevance
  • Developing, reviewing, and maintaining course content (i.e., content page creation, course configuration, course loading, and quality testing and review) in the form of text, images, video, and activities for various topics in computational linguistics
  • Providing support, feedback, and technical guidance to students and teaching assistants working on computational linguistics projects;
  • Participating in the design of experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of new educational methods for large-scale learning
  • Collecting and analyzing data from these experiments as well as drafting scholarly papers describing the research methods, experiments, and results.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in language technologies (including machine translation), computational linguistics, or linguistics required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a related position.
  • Must have experience in each of the following: multilingual Natural Language Processing applications, curation of linguistic datasets, hybrid systems using symbolic reasoning, linguistic data, and rules along with machine learning.
  • Must also have knowledge of (through any completed university-level coursework, seminars, workshops, or real-world, hands-on experience) metrics for evaluating NLP applications.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
