Availability and license

Overall availability

Public

Source code, desktop and CLI downloads, and documentation are public. A model provider must be configured, for example with an API key or a supported subscription; provider access is governed by that provider's terms.15

Availability fact review: Oct 1, 2026

Availability is separate from permission: read the license before using or redistributing.

The repository's LICENSE is the Apache License 2.0 with a 2024 copyright notice for Block, Inc.; Block's launch announcement also stated Apache 2.0. The governance document says documentation other than specifications is made available under CC BY 4.0, but no separate documentation license file is recorded here. The license does not cover model weights or third-party providers and extensions.283Fact reviewed Oct 1, 2026

Component reuse rights

A readable or downloadable component is not automatically reusable. These indicators concern recorded license evidence, not system certification.

Organization context

Provenance and derivatives

Block's Open Source Program Office announced codename goose on January 28, 2025. Block contributed goose as a founding project of the Agentic AI Foundation, announced on December 9, 2025, and on April 7, 2026 the repository moved from Block's GitHub organization to aaif-goose and the documentation to goose-docs.ai.897

U.S. eligibility

Project eligibility rests on documented governing or maintaining entities, not on contributors.

Eligible · basis: U.S.-governed project

The project's governance document states that goose, founded by Block and now stewarded by the Agentic AI Foundation, has been established as a series of LF Projects, LLC, a Delaware series limited liability company, and that governance changes also need LF Projects' approval. The Agentic AI Foundation is a directed fund of The Linux Foundation, which describes itself as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit with a legal postal address in San Francisco, California. Maintainer roles are tied to individuals rather than employers. Block, which created goose, lists its principal executive office in Oakland, California, but eligibility rests on the current documented governance, not on the founding company or contributors.31211131415
