Strands Agents
Project record
Maintained by Amazon Web Services (AWS)756
Strands Agents is an open-source SDK from AWS for building and running AI agents in Python and TypeScript. It runs a model-driven agent loop in the developer's own process, with tools, MCP support, multi-agent patterns, memory and sessions, and tracing. Its repository also holds Strands harness, a preassembled agent, along with a CLI and the documentation site.17

Availability and license
Overall availability
Source code and documentation are public. With the default Amazon Bedrock provider, the Python quickstart requires AWS credentials and model access enabled in the Bedrock console; other providers need their own credentials.111
Availability is separate from permission: read the license before using or redistributing.
The repository's license file is LICENSE.APACHE (Apache 2.0); the Python and TypeScript SDK directories each carry an Apache 2.0 LICENSE file, and the NOTICE file assigns copyright to Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. The license covers the SDK code, not Amazon Bedrock or other model services.2345

Public materials checklist
| Item | Status | Notes and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Source codeIs the source code publicly readable? | Public | Public monorepo containing the Python and TypeScript SDKs, Strands harness, the CLI, and the documentation site; client code only.1 |
| DocumentationIs user documentation published? | Public | Public official documentation at strandsagents.com.8911 |
| InstallationAre installation instructions or packages publicly available? | Public | Python: pip install strands-agents (with strands-agents-tools for prebuilt tools); TypeScript: npm install @strands-agents/sdk. The harness packages are strands-harness and @strands-agents/harness.111 |
| Supported platformsAre supported operating systems or hardware documented? | Public | The README lists Python 3.10 or newer for the Python SDK and Node.js 22 or newer for the TypeScript SDK; some model providers are documented for only one language.19 |
| Release statusAre versioned releases published? | Public | Reviewed Python SDK release python/v1.57.2, marked Latest and published October 1, 2026. Releases are tagged per package (for example python/, typescript/, harness-*, and mcp/). This entry describes the project rather than one release.12 |
What it is useful for
Writing agents that run without a hosted control plane and can be deployed on different infrastructure. Strands is open-source client code that calls a model provider: Amazon Bedrock by default, other hosted providers, or local runtimes such as Ollama and llama.cpp. The SDK does not include model weights, and hosted models keep their own terms and availability.1911
