xAI Community License Agreement
The xAI Community License Agreement is X.AI LLC's license for materials that xAI designates as subject to it; the copy published with the Grok 2 repository on Hugging Face was last updated on November 4, 2025, and designates the Grok 2 model and related artifacts. It grants a revocable license to use, reproduce, distribute, and modify the Materials for non-commercial and research purposes, and for commercial use under conditions.1
These notes restate parts of the license text so you know what to look for. They are not complete, are not legal advice, and do not tell you whether a particular use is allowed. The license text governs.
What the license text says
- Permitted uses
- xAI grants a "non-exclusive, worldwide, revocable license" for non-commercial and research purposes, and for commercial use "solely if you and your affiliates abide by all of the guardrails provided in xAI's Acceptable Use Policy" (Section 2.a).1
- Model training restriction
- The Materials, derivatives, or outputs, including generated data, may not be used to train, create, or improve any foundational, large language, or general-purpose AI model, except for modifications or fine-tuning of xAI Materials permitted by the agreement (Section 2.b).1
- Attribution
- Anyone distributing the Materials, derivatives, or products incorporating them must include the agreement and a set notice, and "Prominently display “Powered by xAI”" in related materials or interfaces (Section 3).1
- Outputs and safety
- The agreement places no restrictions or obligations on outputs generated with the model Materials (Section 4). Licensees are responsible for safety measures "including filters and human oversight" suited to their use case and must follow xAI's Acceptable Use Policy (Section 5).1
- Termination
- The license "terminates immediately upon your breach or if you at any point exceed the permitted uses." It also ends if you file, maintain, or voluntarily join a lawsuit alleging that the Materials infringe a patent, copyright, or other intellectual property, unless it responds to a lawsuit first filed against you (Section 7).1
- Governing law
- Texas law governs the agreement, and disputes are resolved exclusively in the courts located in Tarrant County, Texas (Section 8).1
