BSD 3-Clause License
The BSD 3-Clause License, listed on the SPDX License List as the BSD 3-Clause "New" or "Revised" License, is a short permissive license. It permits redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without modification, under three conditions. The text is a template in which each project supplies its own copyright line.1
These notes restate parts of the license text so you know what to look for. They are not complete, are not legal advice, and do not tell you whether a particular use is allowed. The license text governs.
What the license text says
- Source redistribution
- Redistributions of source code "must retain the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer" (clause 1).1
- Binary redistribution
- Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the copyright notice, the list of conditions, and the disclaimer "in the documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution" (clause 2).1
- No endorsement
- Neither the name of the copyright holder nor the names of its contributors may be used "to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission" (clause 3).1
- No warranty
- The software is provided "AS IS"; implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are disclaimed, and the copyright holder and contributors are not liable for damages arising from its use.1
