IBM releases Granite Speech 5.0 TurboCTC, two compact English speech recognition models

Event: · Published:

On August 25, 2026 IBM's Granite team announced two 470M-parameter English speech recognition models on Hugging Face, granite-speech-5.0-470m-turboctc and granite-speech-5.0-470m-turboctc-nc. The first is released under Apache 2.0; the second, trained with additional data including GigaSpeech and SPGI Speech, is under the non-commercial CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0 license. IBM describes an encoder-only design with 16 Conformer blocks trained with CTC loss, and says that, unlike earlier Granite Speech models, which included an LLM with LoRA adapters, the new models lack capabilities such as speech translation and keyword biasing. USASI has not tested either model.1
