Anton Troynikov
Co-founder of Chroma; co-author of Chroma technical reports on retrieval and context
Anton Troynikov is a co-founder of Chroma, the company behind the open-source Chroma database for AI applications. Troynikov's site says Troynikov previously worked on robotics, with a focus on 3D computer vision, perception, large-scale mapping and state estimation. Troynikov has co-authored Chroma technical reports on embedding adapters, document chunking, generative benchmarking and long-context performance.14567
Career
Troynikov's site describes Troynikov as a co-founder of Chroma, building the memory subsystem for language models, and notes earlier work in robotics on 3D computer vision, perception, large-scale mapping and state estimation.1
Chroma's April 2023 company post, signed by Jeff, Anton and the Chroma team, says Chroma was founded on the idea that models can be understood through the interpretability of their latent spaces, and that the founders built the database because they needed one for that work.2
Research
Troynikov co-authored Chroma's Embedding Adapters report (May 2024), which applied a linear transform to query embeddings to improve retrieval, and Evaluating Chunking Strategies for Retrieval (July 2024).45
Troynikov is also a co-author of Generative Benchmarking (April 2025) and Context Rot (July 2025), which studied how model performance changes as input length grows.67
Work
Chroma (open-source database)Open-source code
Co-founded the company behind the Apache-2.0 Chroma database, which the founders' 2023 post says grew out of their interpretability work and their need for an easy-to-use open-source vector database.231
Evaluating Chunking Strategies for Retrieval (external site: trychroma.com)Published research
Co-authored with Brandon Smith a 2024 report presenting a token-level evaluation of document chunking strategies for retrieval.5
MathLLM (external site: troynikov.io)
Built a small agent that lets language models ground mathematical reasoning in a software proof assistant, as listed on Troynikov's site.1
