George Halal

Co-author of Contextual AI's open Reranker v2 models; machine learning software engineer at Google

  • Machine learning software engineer, Google1

George Halal is a machine learning software engineer at Google, according to Halal's own site. At Contextual AI, where Halal was a member of technical staff, Halal trained the company's instruction-following rerankers and is the first-listed author of the Reranker v2 release (August 2025), whose open-weight models come in 1B, 2B and 6B sizes. Halal earned a PhD in physics at Stanford University in July 2024.123

Career

Halal completed a PhD in physics at Stanford University in July 2024, with research that included computer vision methods for separating cosmological signals from foreground contaminants. Halal then worked on training language models and on production ranking and agentic retrieval systems, and now works as a machine learning software engineer at Google.1

Contextual AI work

Halal's site lists training an instruction-following reranker (v1) and then the open-sourced v2 family of multilingual instruction-following rerankers. Contextual AI's August 2025 post, by Halal and Director of Research Sheshansh Agrawal, released Reranker v2 in 1B, 2B and 6B sizes with quantized versions and three instruction-following evaluation datasets.12

Halal is also first-listed author of Contextual AI's November 2025 post describing an agentic alternative to GraphRAG, and Halal's site lists work on optimizing an agent's use of search and navigation tools.41
